VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Postal Service continues its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a dedication ceremony for its Battle for Vicksburg Stamp. Several were gathered to witness the unveiling Thursday morning at Vicksburg Military Park.
The stamp is a reproduction of a lithograph by Currier & Ives titled “Admiral Porter’s Fleet Running the Rebel Blockade of the Mississippi at Vicksburg, April 16th 1863.”
“This is an opportunity for people to take a look back at their history but also to look forward in building a relationship between the park and the community,” said Cathy Beeler with the Vicksburg Military Park.
“A lot of times people look at their civil war history as old dead people and dates, but this gives them a second change to look at the relevance of that history and how it effects us today.”
If you were not able to make it to the dedication ceremony for the stamp you should be able to pick one up at your local post office.
